About Us

John Stansfeld was established in 1857 selling Ironmongery & Timber Products.
As the business grew they eventually settled at 12,14,16,18,20 & 22 Great George Street in Leeds.

This building is still standing and known as Stansfeld Chambers, which is a Grade II listed building.

In 1918 the first automatic telephone exchange was opened in Leeds and soon after the company were allocated “No. 6”. To appreciate how quickly they were moving with this modern technology, Leeds Town Hall was “No. 1”.

Folk-lore would also have us believe that Mr Marks bought materials for his famous “Penny Bazaar” market stall in Leeds Kirkgate market from John Stansfelds back in 1884, before inviting Mr Spencer to be his partner when he finally secured a permanent stall in 1894. The rest is history as they say!

As time progressed, the company concentrated its efforts on Ironmongery and Steel products, which was the beginnings of the steel stockholder we know today.

Due to continued expansion, the company did move to various locations across the City of Leeds before they finally settled at its present location, formally Springwell Tannery, on Buslingthorpe Lane in the mid 1960’s.

GHE (UK) Ltd were formed in 1990 and quickly built a reputation for outstanding customer service and excellent product knowledge. This combined with a ‘Can Do’ attitude towards customer requirements really did push the company forward.

GHE (UK) were growing very quickly and in 2006 they completed the acquisition of John Stansfeld.  This acquisition soon transformed the companies into a modern Steel Stockholder capable of supplying exactly what you need, when you want it.
